In an effort to recognize and honor the work of health and social service providers who have or are currently providing culturally competent care and services, we are proud to announce the debut of the Health Impact Leader Awards!
The purpose of the award ceremony is to recognize individual physicians, nurses, social workers, advocates, community members, volunteers and agencies that have made a positive impact on the health of the LGBTQ Community. Individual nominees need not be LGBTQ identified, nor must they have made contributions as part of their professional employment. The LGBTQ Health Coalition hopes to recognize the work of both seasoned and emerging leaders who have made a significant impact on the health of this community.
The HILA committee reviewed 24 nominees from a wide range of fields, including physicians, community activists, nurses, social workers, HIV advocates, non-profit leaders and public health professionals. The nomination field was compelling and the decision process was difficult, but the committee felt the winners are those who exemplify the spirit of culturally competent care and provide outstanding care. The committee is excited to publicly recognize the winners at the HILA awards ceremony that will conclude the Greater Columbus LGBTQ Health Equity Conference on Saturday, October 31st. Congratulations to all of our Health Impact Leaders!

Dr. Michael Para, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center
Medical Provider Award
Dr. Para has served as one of the top HIV/AIDS researchers, clinicians and public health advocates in central Ohio for nearly three decades. When, early in his career, the HIV/AIDS crisis was at its height, Dr. Para worked without the funding, attention, and experience that other areas received. He provided compassionate care when there was no cure and little hope, even working with lawmakers so that HIV testing could become anonymous. Then, his work with the development of protease inhibitors led the way to the treatments that turned HIV into a manageable illness. As a member of the Columbus AIDS Task Force Board and consultant for the ARC Ohio Medical Centers, Dr. Para continues to lay the foundation for high quality HIV primary care services. Today, he is an advocate for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and continues to be a vocal and tireless figure in the world of public health.
